New York is definitely one for
the girls! Having been one of those avid watchers of Sex and the City I think
every girl who visits Manhattan secretly imagines themselves as Carrie Bradshaw
strutting the streets – and secretly a little part of my inside did!
Having my 30th Birthday in New
York however was the perfect excuse to try this out and thanks to Chris and my
wonderful university friends I got to enjoy NYC with style…
Afternoon Tea at Park Plaza
We spent about 3 hours at the
Park Plaza Hotel enjoying their Afternoon Tea menu as one of my Birthday
treats. Sipping on my first ever glass of Veuve Clicquot, we ordered one New
Yorker Tea and one Champagne Tea (if you can afford to do the Champagne Tea the
difference in what you got was well worth the extra!).
As you’d expect from a true
British afternoon tea, the stand had an array of sandwiches and savoury bites
including a Lobster Roll, Foie Gras toasted Brioche and Prime Rib Sandwich, two
types of freshly baked scones with Devonshire cream and preserves, and
beautiful selection of pastries and sweets. My favourites were the Salted
Caramel Ganache Tart and Chocolate Passionfruit Macaron.
Tea for two and two for tea
All washed down with a pot of
Margaret’s Hope – a fruity summer flush Darjeeling, and Grand Lapsang Souchong
– a delicately and lightly smoked tea from South Korea.
If you are looking for a
sophisticated end to a long morning of shopping or sight-seeing this was a
heavily way to do so in the beautiful surroundings and stained glass ceiling of
the Palm Court.
230
After an evening of watching Ghostbusters
in Bryant Park the evening before my Birthday, we strolled down Fifth Avenue
and decided it’d be great to see in my Birthday as it turned midnight on a roof
top bar. We’d heard about 230 Fifth
when researching great places to go in NYC and just as we arrived midnight
struck and I was greeted with my first “Happy Birthday” from the bouncer as he
checked my ID! There was a great buzz at this bar but plenty of space to find
the perfect view of the Empire State to enjoy whilst sipping on a Passionfruit
Martini! We even ended up coming back again to ‘see out’ my Birthday at the
same bar 24 hours later!
Carriage ride through Central Park
Just as BIG picks up Carrie in
horse drawn carriage, another of my birthday treats was a pre-booked carriage
ride through Central Park. We had a lovely white carriage with red interiors.
It was a fabulous way to tour the highlights of the park, our guide pointed out
all the famous movie shots and sights as we gentle rolled down the quiet, leafy
roads through the park. I felt like I should be doing a royal wave to everyone
who passed us by.
Chicago on Broadway
We couldn’t come to NYC without
an evening’s entertainment from the world renowned Broadway! We decided after
reviewing all the options at the half price ticket booth (go to the one near
Brooklyn Bridge – less queues!) to watch the original Broadway musical Chicago
which was simply spectacular. Such a simple narrative with minimal ‘show’ – the
backdrop was the band seated on stage and the actors interacted with them as
they narrated the story through song. It was all about the music which to me
what exactly what a musical is about!
"She had it coming"
Sixty Five
This hidden gem was a real ‘on
top of the world’ moment at this roof top terrace on the top of the Rockefeller
Centre. Sipping a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc and savouring the delicious
light bites from their menu we sat back with the best seat in the house to
watch the sunset over the whole of Manhattan.
Chris led me there as a surprise and we got there
early (before 5pm) to get a table seated
on the terrace overlooking the Empire State Building. A magic place high above
the hub-bub of the city this bar allowed us to stop and really take in the fact
we were in NYC!
